Francigena.eu & itineraria.eu

These are two linked sites on the topic of travelling the Via Francigena on foot or bicycle with the ‘itineraria’ site being the main one.  The itineraria site is that of Alberto Conte who worked for the Italian Cultural Ministry checking and documenting the route resulting in the publication of a free downloadable guide - see next entry.

The ‘francigena’ site (do not confuse with the European Association site above) has a home page in English but links from it are to pages in the  ‘itineraria’  site, most of the pages of which are in Italian.  Offers pictures for sale.

Italian Ministry of Culture Map & Guide

The information is actualy stored on the Itineraria site above but the links to the components which comprise downloadable pfd instructions, GPS points and route photo s can be found on this page of the Ministry’s website.  The route is divided up into 5 sections which are then split into stages of between 15 and 34 kms in length.

North Downs Way National Trail

An excellent web resource, part of a larger web site run by  National Trails covering England & Wales.  This section deals with the North Downs Way, part of which (the Canterbury to Dover section) will be promoted by Canterbury Council as the official Via Francigena in England.

The website gives information about planning a trip, accommodation along the route, places to visit and has ‘zoomable’ maps.  Well worth a visit particulary if you are thinking of walking to Canterbury from your front door!

Via Francigena di San Francesco in Umbria

A section of the Umbria Regional Tourist Information website covering the Via Francigena di San Francesco starting at Citerna and traversing Umbria as far as Piediluco after which you pass into the region of Lazio. The route takes you through (amongst others) Pietralunga, Gubbio, Valfabbrica (where there is a somewhat contrived looking detour through Ripa to Perugia), Assisi, Trevi, Spoleto and Arrone.  There are PDF files of downloadable instructions with altitude profiles as well as information about where to sleep.  A very useful, informative site albeit in Italian.  Just a pity it only covers Umbria.

Cammino di Assisi

A site devoted to a pilgrimage to Assisi starting from Dovadola in North East Italy in order to pass through the hermitage of Montepaolo, the first home of St Anthony in Italy.  The route takes in Portico, La Verna, San Sepolcro and after entering Umbria appears to follow the same one as above to Assisi but without the detour via Perugia.  There are instructions in English, with altitude charts and CIA maps but are not downloadable.  There is no section about accommodation - it appears that one registers to do the pilgrimage and then numbers are controlled as accommodation seems to be in monastery/parrochial refuges.

The St Francis Walk

A site in Italian and English supported by the Rieti Tourist Board about  walks to sanctuaries and places associated with St Francis in the Rieti Valley .  It has maps and information about accommodation.  There is a section about walking itineraries to Rome but as these are organised by a commercial Tour Operator there is not much detail.
