  Founded as the "Schola Saxonum" in 727 as a refuge for Anglo-Saxon pilgrims to Rome, Santo Spirito was converted at the end of the 12th century to a hpsital with special responsibility for the poor and for abandonned babies. Much of the present building is due to Pope Sixtus IV in the 15th century.
