 **  New Guides available  **

We are pleased to announce that there are 2 new Guides available for the Via Francigena, both published by the Confraternity of Pilgrims to Rome.

The first, Guide to Services & Accommodation on the Via Francigena” by Alison Raju is our guide to accommodation and services on the route between Canterbury and the St Bernard Pass, updated every year on the basis of pilgrims' feedback, and re-issued each January.   The book contains details of accommodation and services on the traditional route in England, France and Switzerland.   This is not a guide with maps or route directions which will be necessary on this part of the Via Francigena. We would advise you to purchase the Lightfoot or Cicerone (when published) guides which contain much more detailed information on the route itself.

The second is “Rome: The Early Churches, a Pilgrims Guide”, by Howard Nelson and is based on a series of articles by him (see the Via Francigena Articles page to read one of them) published in our Newsletter.  The guide does not suggest any itineraries and although it refers to page numbers in Alta Macadam’s Blue Guide to Rome and map references for Michelin’s #38 Roma you will need to get the map out before you start and work out an itinerary for yourself.  This is a book to read before you get to Rome and to carry in your pocket or bag while you are there.  Walking around the city and visiting its churches with some knowledge of their history is much more rewarding than ticking off sights in your Lonely Planet guide.

See the Via Francigena Guidebooks section for more details and how to obtain a copy

Remember that members of CPR can claim a discount of 10% at outdoor equipment firm ‘Itchy Feet’

The company Itchy Feet has a store in Bath (sadly their London store has closed down) and members can obtain a 10% discount on items that are not already on sale.  You will need to bring with you evidence of membership - either a Pilgrim Credential or your Membership Certificate.
