Guides
There are a number of Guides available published by different organisations - see the ‘Guide Books & Maps’ section which lists the guides.  But there are a number of things to remember about guides:

1.  A route in one guide is almost certain to be not identical to a route in another guide.  This is due to a variety of reasons and the most likely is that there can be a considerable delay between walking/cycling a route, writing up the guide and actually having it published.
2.  Information about things such as shops, restaurants, accommodation may be out of date - see above!
3.  Maps in guides may look adequate but rarely are - eg the route changes due to a natural disaster, or you take a wrong turning and get lost!
4.  Humans are human and with the best will in the world mistakes almost certainly will be made.

As a result of the work of Alberto Conte (working for the Italian Cultural Ministry), a new guide was published late 2008 and is available free of charge on the internet.  It has GPS and Google Earth tracks and although instructions are in Italian they are easy to follow with directional arrows.  This resource is likely to have a fast update turnaround & can be accessed here Italian Ministry of Culture Guide.  Up to date accommodation information can be obtained from the CPR. (see entry under tip A ).

This is not to say that one should not purchase a guide.  They are invaluable for planning and use in the field for backbround/historical information as well as filling in any gaps.  In addition you are well-advised to take a proper map of the regions through which you intend to travel as although the route is reasonably well marked in Italy and Switzerland, there are virtually no waymarks in France.
