Maps
Availability of maps is covered in detail in our Guide Books & Maps section. In addition, several Guides provide GPS points. Even if you get a guide which does have maps, it is suggested you carry a map of scale about 1:100,000 as a back up. This is because if you do take a wrong turn, sometimes the maps in the guide do not have enough detail. Often the maps in guidebooks look as though there is sufficient detail but 'on the ground' they do not. This of course is a problem in Italy where 1:100,000 maps are not available for the whole route but waymarking is quite good and getting better in Italy so it is not so much a problem and a larger scale map may be sufficient.
Much as it seems like sacrilege (sorry my spelling is not what it used to be!) it is suggested that maps be cut to just include the route and surrounding area to save weight. Stanfords is a good place in London to get maps and they have an excellent website as well.
