Pilgrim Record
The Pilgrim Record is a certificate of bona fide pilgrim status, and may be required for access to the refugios/monasteries. It is stamped at the beginning, and daily at churches, town halls, bars etc along the way. Pilgrim records are made available only to walkers, cyclists, and pilgrims on horseback. They can be obtained from us (see Pilgrim Credential (AKA Pilgrim Record, Pilgrim Passport)
Post Ahead
If you want to send things to yourself further along the route (such as maps and guides) or have people write to you, you can do this via the poste restante system whereby you collect your mail (on presentation of your passport) at the post office (PTT in France, La Poste in Switzerland, Fermoposta in Italy). Address the letter/parcel to yourself (Surname first), Poste Restante, postal code and name of town. This is a very useful service especially if you are undertaking a long pilgrimage. With careful planning you can use the packaging of the collected articles to repackage items to be sent home. Below are addresses that may be of use on Via Francigena.
Note: We have been told that in France they only keep items for 15 days before returning them to the sender and there is also the possibility that you will be charged for collection. This may also be the case with Switzerland and Italy
