Start points

When you start at Canterbury DO NOT pay to enter the Cathedral. Show your Pilgrim Record and tell them you are a pilgrim.  The Welcome Centre will stamp your Pilgrim Record.  If you want to start with a blessing phone ahead, the number is 01227 762862 and ask for the Visits Office or Canon Claire.  Alternatively email the ‘enquiries’ address on the Cathedral website -  http://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/.

If you cannot spare time to walk all the way there are alternatives which will reduce your journey time.

Besancon is where the flat (not all) countryside of France meets the Jura and the scenery picks up.

Lausanne gives you a few days flattish walking around the lake and along the Rhone before starting the St Bernard pass.

Martigny would be the equivalent of SJPP with a stiff first couple of days.

Aosta would be the equivalent of Pamplona.

Lucca (the minimum distance, 400km, for cyclists to qualify for the Testimonium)

Siena to Rome can be done in 12 to 13 days so could be fitted into a fortnight

Acquapendente (the minimum distance, 130km, for walkers to qualify for the Testimonium)
