The first thing to realise is that the Via Francigena (VF) is unlike the pilgrim routes to Santiago. The infrastructure, the plentiful, dedicated, cheap pilgrim accommodation and the camaraderie one finds on the Camino Frances to Santiago do not yet exist in the Via Francigena. Few pilgrims walk the route all the way from Canterbury and it is possible that you will not meet another pilgrim until well into Italy. At the moment you are a pioneer.
