Pilgrim Routes - The Via Francigena
The Via Francigena is an old pilgrim route running from Canterbury to Rome. Followed by St Augustine it was the most important road of Medieval Europe from the 6th to the 13th century. In 990 it was used by Sigeric to go to Rome to receive his pallium. On the way back he carefully documented the places at which he stayed thus providing us with a record of the route. Many people have reported difficulties in finding the route out of Canterbury, this despite the waymarking efforts by Canterbury Council, assisted by members of the CPR. Therefore we have written route instructions which can be downloaded (see below).
